Which type of SSL would be the right fit for me between DV, OV and EV SSL? This is the exact question that will be asked from time to time among everyone that is in need of an SSL certificate.

When considering which SSL certificate to buy for your website, you will have to choose between a Domain Validation (DV), Organization Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV).

The basic difference is that DV certificates are the least expensive and most accessible type of SSL certificate. OV certificates are more expensive than DV, but less costly than EV. EV certificates are the highest trusted and most expensive type of SSL certificate available.

When picking between DV, OV and EV SSL, it will depend on the company’s needs. The main difference is how much validation the company needs to go through in order to get an SSL certificate.

DV SSL is less expensive and has lower validation requirements than EV certificates do. Organizations using this type of certificate are not required to provide their business name, location or their legal entity (LLC), but they will still have to verify their domain ownership by emailing documentation of authority or a verified web address to prove that they own the domain name. Users should be wary when keying in sensitive information on such websites as phishing websites predominantly use DV certificates.

OV certificates require more validation than DV certificates do, but they are also less expensive than EV certificates and have lower validation requirements than EV certificates. All organizations that need an OV certificate must provide a company name, a location and a legal entity. EV certificate requires the company to be registered for at least 3 years as such EV certificates provide the highest trust for the organization and the people they serve.

There are many other factors that come into play when choosing a type of certificate such as price, support and company reputation.
